Medical implants and components utilize different alloys and coatings for good mechanical strength, wear and corrosion resistant properties, super elasticity and most importantly biocompatibility.
Buehler’s webinar will include examples of metallographic preparation procedures for medical grade stainless steels, titanium and its alloys and cobalt alloys. In addition, the webinar will also highlight preparation approaches for ceramic based materials such as dental materials, and other coatings applied on metallic substrates to facilitate grafting with human tissue when used.
Medical components and materials can present unique metallographic preparation challenges relating to mechanical damage during sectioning and grinding, as well as masking of microstructural details during polishing stages. Potential difficulties during metallographic preparation include fracture of hard or brittle materials; deformation or loss of soft materials; the development of false porosity; foreign contamination from abrasives used during polishing.
This webinar will highlight the preparation challenges and approaches that should be adopted to achieve good quality, efficient preparation, and correct evaluation of a wide range of medical components, materials and devices.
