What is the best way to preserve and transport polished samples?
We get this question a lot from our customers. One easy way to protect your polished samples is to use a disposable mounting cup like the Buehler orange cups in the images below.
These specimen cups are flexible and will slip over your sample mount. This will not only protect your sample from scratches but also from the environment. In addition, these sample preparation cups will make it much easier to package for shipping.
Another method is to use plastic storage boxes like the ones available from Ted Pella or EMS (or any other microscopy/metallurgy supplier) and attach your mounts using double sided tape.
If you are worried about exposing your sample to the atmosphere, or your samples oxidize quickly, you can use a vacuum sealing system like the FoodSaver available at household supply stores.
The vacuum will protect your polished surfaces not only from air but will also protect them when shipped.
If you are concerned about static you can opt for a vacuum packaging system for static dissipative bags.
Please remember to keep fingerprints off of your polished surfaces! The oils on your skin will not only attract contamination but can etch your surface over time.
